Works well - Loud Aug 31, 2011
By Karla I read a lot of reviews and found that the biggest problem with at home bikes was the chain sound. This one didn't have reviews but it had one of the heaviest fly wheels I could find at a reasonable price. This bike definitely has a lot of chain sound and also when you increase the resistance, it makes quite a bit of sound as well. If you want a quiet bike, this is not the one for you. Other than the LOUDness of it, it's extremely sturdy and well made.

Horrible Equipment Nov 08, 2011
By Saebloot The item is sturdy and well built, but the thing is terribly noisy. I'm disappointed. The chain sounds like a jiggling bolt, which is what I searched for finally realizing the noise was coming from the chain. The resistance squeaks and squeals, and needs constant adjustment to minimize additional noise levels. Also, with decent resistance the left pedal knocks at the top of the stoke, but but it doesn't knock at low resistance. This is a poorly engineered item. I regret the purchase, and would not recommend this to anyone with hearing. Were I to resell it to get a quality piece of equipment, the presentation of this item to a potential buyer would include a number of apologies. Bummer bike.
Update:
After 2 visits from a manufacturer-sent technician, and about 6 weeks of just waiting with a useless bike, I had no choice but to return it. Thank God the seller has customer service, because the manufacturer doesn't. They don't answer calls, and the only way to contact them, and it takes days for a response, is via internet mail. I finally gave up on the manufacturer and contacted the seller for the return--and I also suggested the seller stop selling this equipment. After I returned this piece of junk, the seller refunded my money. There are other bikes available, and they have to be better than this item. If you plan on using a spin bike, buy something else.

Should consider something else Jan 11, 2012
By Jim The noise from the resistance pads (that rub on the flywheel) and connecting parts is so loud I cannot hear the television. When you can reach customer service or whenever they decide to return your email they just tell me to put cooking spray on it. It works for a day and then you have to do it again. There is no reason for this. Also, the computer that came with mine has not worked and I have been trying to get it replaced for TWO months. AND this bike is under warranty. Last resort is for them to have someone come out to repair it. If I could deliver it to Pro Form's front door and leave it there I would.

Sturdy little thing Mar 07, 2012
By Kris M I ordered the proform 490 spx a couple weeks after deciding that it was more cost effective than a treadmill and that I needed to sit on a real bike before purchase. I needed something indoors so I could start getting some exercise after surgery. The bike arrived on a Friday afternoon and my dh put it together that evening. He did it by himself and said it was easy.
NOISE (or lack thereof) On Sunday, I hopped on and started up a tv show. The show lasted longer than my pedaling, but I could hear it just fine at normal volume. The 490 isn't particularly loud at all. With increased resistance, there is some friction noise, but not enough to turn tv up. I have it set up on a cycle mat over hardwood in my upstairs bedroom. No one outside the room or downstairs can hear me ride. I'm sure the high cathedral ceiling in the room help with noise reduction. I think the key is making sure the chain and drivetrain is assembled and adjusted properly (like a road bike). Mine is still quiet after two weeks and no oil or grease. Having read other reviews, I worried about the noise, but am totally satisfied with the minimal noise from the 490.
LCD Monitor The display is not intuitive, but it's not difficult either. Getting into setup takes a bit of prolonged pressure, which feels odd. Once set up, it works fine. I connected my Polar heat monitor that I got with my Poar watch, and it seems to be working.
PORTABILITY One of te reasons I chose the 490 was the wheels. Since it's in our master bedroom,I wanted to be able to wheel the bike out in front of the tv when I use it and then back to the corner for storage. (Luckily we have a big room.) having just had arm surgery, I can't actually move it myself yet, but my DH where's it out every morning and puts it away every night in case I want to watch tv....he says I should be able to handle it myself soon. So far, the bike as stood up to daily wheeling out and ack, no lose screws or shaky frame,
The seat is a bit uncomfortable, but I stop noticing after a couple minutes.. Overall, I love my new exercise cycle.

Proform 490 SPX Feb 16, 2012
By Superman I wish I read the earlier reviews prior to buying my bike. I agree with everything others have to say. The chain is very loud. It gets louder as I pedal faster. I call the proform service line today and they put me on hold for 95 minutes and phone got disconnected. I did send them a email, hopefully they get back to me. I bought the bike on Amazon and it weights over 100lbs. I am going to try to return it becasue I am not happy with it at all. Proform 490 SPX Upright Bike
